 Как связаны герпес и депрессия

The catalysts for the development of mental illness can be completely different things, including heredity and deep life shocks. But only recently it became known that one of the most common viruses in the world can provoke the development of such a serious ailment as depression. More on this in the Rambler material.
German scientists from the University of Würzburg conducted a study and found that herpes viruses of the sixth type play a fundamental role in the development of a number of mental disorders.
Specialists studied the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance and movement, as well as emotions, perception, memory and language.

One of the main structural elements of the cerebellum is the Purkinje neurons. During the study, experts found that in patients with bipolar disorder and severe depression, a significant portion of Purkinje neurons are infected with type six herpes viruses.
Researchers for the first time have proven that this type of herpes virus infects nerve cells and provokes cognitive impairment that negatively affects mood.

Experts have suggested that herpes viruses of the sixth type cause the immune system to attack infected neurons, which subsequently leads to chronic inflammation. In the future, scientists intend to find out whether this is actually so, having studied at the molecular level the interaction of the virus and nerve cells.
